New Resident Services

Whether you’re coming back home or coming to make New Zealand your new home we have a dedicated New Resident Services Team to help take the stress out of opening a bank account and setting up your finances. They provide you with a single point of contact for anything to do with banking in New Zealand , and they’ll help make your move easier and more convenient.

The team will work with you to help you get your finances arranged before you leave. And when you arrive in New Zealand , they’ll provide personal service to help you get settled with all your financial needs.

Here are some of the ways our New Resident Services team can help transferring your banking requirements to New Zealand smoothly:

Before you leave:

  • They can help you open an account before you even arrive in the country. Once your account is set up they will help you manage it until you get here, and provide ongoing support to make sure you’re fully set-up with your banking.
  • Whether you are emigrating or just looking to send money to family and friends, the New Resident Services team can assist you with your international funds transfers.
  • We have a number of ways for you to manage any foreign currency; such as Foreign Currency accounts. Contact the Team to talk about your specific needs, they will be able to provide more information on how the account may benefit you.
  • You may be able to get a pre-approved home-loan before you arrive, it will give you an indication of how much you can borrow. It’s free to get one, there’s no obligation to draw down your loan and it’s valid for six months.

When you arrive:

  • Once you arrive in New Zealand you will have a dedicated Personal Manager who will help you with your banking requirements. They can provide information about finance and banking in New Zealand, and put you in touch with people who can help you with things like tax, GST, and other financial issues (check out our Getting Started in New Zealand page for some useful links).
  • Your Personal Manager will also sit down and talk with you about your long and short-term financial needs and goals – whether it’s buying a home, investment options or foreign currency accounts – and discuss accounts and services that can help you achieve your goals.
  • If you have specific needs, your Personal Manager will also be able to refer you to specialists within The National Bank – for example, if you want to set up a business, get into farming or buy a house we have specialists who can help you.
  • If you are an Asian language speaker, our Asian Banking Team may be able to talk with you in the language you are most comfortable with.
